Winter Gems – Starry Nights on the shores of the Bras d’Or Lake
This was my first time exploring the West Bay/St. George’s Channel area of the Bras d’Or Lake. With freshly fallen snow and the sun out in full force, it made for the perfect Sunday afternoon drive. Around every bend was a gorgeous landscape of the Bras d’Or, and I started sounding like Owen Wilson saying “wow” every two seconds. The area is full of cottage and country vibes. It’s one of those parts of Cape Breton that’s secluded enough that almost every car you drive by waves, and I just love that!

Lakeside Luxury Domes
Lakeside Luxury Domes made for the perfect accommodation for exploring the Bras d’Or Lake. The domes are close enough that you can hear the waves crashing on the beach stones. Each dome has a great view, an outdoor hot tub, a BBQ area, privacy fencing and a fire pit.

The geodesic dome structures offer incredible views of the sun setting behind the rolling hills surrounding the lake and the stars above you at night. It’s the perfect spot to brew up a coffee or tea and enjoy the view. Inside, there is a fully equipped kitchen and a full bathroom, lots of sitting room, a super comfy bed, and can sleep up to four people. The domes are heated and toasty warm in the middle of February!

Explore on Snowshoes
With the last bit of daylight, I decided to grab my snowshoes and head out to explore. The property is beautiful, and I love the wooden rustic buildings. There are 17 acres of forest surrounding the shorelines to explore. With the fresh snow, the forest looked incredible. I found a nice little brook to walk along for a bit before heading to the shoreline for some more sightseeing.

The Bras d’Or Lakes Inn Restaurant
The Bras d’Or Lakes Inn restaurant is located in St. Peter’s and was such a great choice for supper. I instantly loved the cedar wooden lodge vibes. The food was so good. It’s one of those restaurants where you can tell the chef takes pride in their work. I ordered the bacon chicken burger and fries.

The staff were great to chat with and they told me that their St. Patrick’s Day event each year is the place to be, bumping with live music. They host lots of other events, music and weddings. They are also currently building an indoor pool and cabins on the property.

Hot Tub Under the Stars
Once I got back from the restaurant, it was time to relax in the hot tub under the stars! The night sky was super clear, with lots of notable constellations like Orion and the Big Dipper visible. I even watched the Starlink satellites launching off into orbit. Staring at all this while lying in the hot tub, the cold winter air freezing my hair, this is how winter’s meant to be enjoyed.

It was time for bed, and I turned the lights out. I could hear the waves tumbling on the shore and see the view of the Bras d’Or Lake under the stars from my comfy bed. I highly recommend exploring the Bras d’Or Lake in the winter, not just the summer!
