The ICHC Presents the Engaging Youth In Heritage Award PDF Print E-mail

The Engaging Youth in Heritage Award will be awarded to a Cape Breton Island museum, archives or heritage group that has developed an activity (exhibit, program or project) designed to engage youth in heritage. The activity must be targeted to youth; encourage them to participate in a heritage activity; provide them with an increased understanding and appreciation of heritage; and help engage potential future heritage leaders. The award includes a $300 cash prize. The first year of this award is sponsored by James O. St.Clair of Mull River, NS.

ELIGIBILITY

The award is open to any Cape Breton Island-based non-profit museum, archives, or heritage organization, with the exception of institutions employing members of the awards committee.

DEADLINE

The application deadline is January 30, 2008 for activities during the 2007 calendar year. The award will be presented at the April 2008 AGM of the Iona Connection Heritage

Cooperative.

CRITERIA

Projects will be assessed on the following criteria:

  • Heritage: Enriches and expands youth's understanding of and appreciation for Cape Breton Island's cultural and natural heritage.
  • Relevance: Demonstrates an ability to engage youth in an aspect of Cape Breton Island’s heritage.
  • Collaboration: Demonstrates effective cooperation with other groups, including schools.
  • Partnership: Shares authority, investment of resources, and risk-taking.
  • Vision: Identifies and captures potential youth leaders in heritage.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Nominations may be submitted by any person or group in the community where the activity (exhibit, project or program) took place. Complete and sign the Submission Form, and submit it with three (3) copies of the following:

  • A brief project summary of 50 words or less. Attach as Appendix 1.
  • A full project description, max. 2 pages. Attach as Appendix 2.
  • A detailed explanation, max. 4 pages, that details how the program/project addresses meets the criteria in an outstanding way. Attach as Appendix 3.
  • A copy of all supporting documents and support materials, such as photographs, slides, media clippings, publications, videos, websites, etc. Note only one copy of these materials is required. At the end of the adjudication process these materials will be returned.
