Victoria County Heritage/Archives Newsletter - December, 2005

The newsletter is being compiled a bit earlier than usual as the Heritage and Archives Department will be closed during the week between Christmas and New Year – the Heritage/Archives Clerk will be taking a few holidays over that period.

The month of December, to date ( 22nd December) has gone by very quickly. A lot of work was completed with regard to built heritage site forms and other archival work which was pending.

Despite the “short” month, the number of visitors to the Archives were steady with a total of twelve people dropping by for information and doing research in the first three and one half weeks.

On 7th and 8th of December, the Heritage/Archives Clerk attended a workshop shop in Sydney which was hosted by the Nova Scotia Historic Places Initiative. HPI which is division of the Department of Tourism and Culture for the Province has as it objective to create a registry of all the historic properties which have been recorded by Municipalities, towns, villages and individuals in the Province. This registry will be in the form of a data base which will be linked to the Federal Heritage Properties. Meghan Hallett and Bruce Nunn both of whom are employed by HPI co-hosted the workshop. There were several presentations in relation to the importance of registering of old buildings in order to preserve them for the future. Approximately 25 people from Cape Breton attended this workshop. Victoria County had two representatives in attendance in the persons of Katie Grist from the Boularderie Historical Society, and Joan MacInnes representing the Municipal Heritage and Archives Department. It was an excellent workshop with a good deal of information with regard to the registration of heritage properties at all levels of government. All of the participants are looking forward to getting together again for a similar workshop next year in Truro.

The newspaper article for December which appeared in latest edition of The Victoria Standard featured a Baddeck building. It was written about the New Bras d’Or House and its role as a commercial structure on the main street of Baddeck since 1894.

That just about wraps things up for December and 2005. The Archives will be, once again, looking forward to hosting a social afternoon in February on the occasion of National Heritage Day on the 3rd Monday of the month. Details to appear in the January newsletter.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.
