Victoria County Heritage/Archives Newsletter - September, 2005

This month has literally flown by – it just seems like a few days ago that I was writing the newsletter for August.

Once again the heritage and archives department was very busy with visitors, carrying out research, and inventory field work.

The archives has acquired some more old photographs of Baddeck. Mrs. Frances Street has provided us with several pictures which her mother, Mrs. Margaret MacCharles had in her possession. Presently, these photos are being scanned and reproduced for the archives. It is such an asset for the archives to have these photos available for the public to view.

A new cork board was put up the foyer of the Court House this month – now we have two boards to display the old photographs. The displaying of these old photos has proven to be very popular with the public – both visitors from away and locals alike.

Yet another descendent of James Duffus in the person of Roslyn Duffus from Bedford paid two visits to the archives in September. She very kindly gave us a complete Duffus family tree beginning with William Duffus, father of James right through to the present time.

The article which was written to “The Victoria Standard” for September featured the former home of Hon. Charles James Campbell one of Baddeck’s most prominent men. Mr. Campbell was a merchant, a ship builder and mine owner. The community of New Campbellton was named in his honour. He also had a distinguished political career in that he served as both M.L.A and M.P. for Victoria County. His home “ Duntulm Cottage” was razed by the Municipality in 1967 in order to make way for the construction of Alderwood seniors home. Mr. Campbell’s house was converted into an hotel in the 1920’s and was known as Hotel Baddeck. It continued to operate as such until 1966. The picture shown in the article was one of those provided by Frances Street. On two occasions, during the month, the heritage inventory clerk managed to get some field work completed – one trip north and another over to Boularderie in order to finally finish up inventory work.

The leaves will be turning colour soon and then falling off – the perfect season for carrying out built heritage inventory work. It is the hope of the heritage inventory clerk to make several field trips seeking out and photographing old buildings.

That is all the news for September - welcome to Fall everyone – we will be writing again at the end of October.
