Victoria County Heritage/Archives Newsletter - July 2005

In glancing at the calendar this morning, the realization that it was the last weekend of July has prompted the writing of the newsletter with the activities and happenings in the Heritage and Archives Department during this month.

July, as is the case with most of the months lately, seems to have gone by so quickly. The Archives was kept quite busy with visitors – both local and from away. The clerk spent considerable time in assisting a young local student who is working on a project which will focus on the events and businesses in Baddeck in the summer of 2005, however, with historical background for the for the properties located in the village. Information regarding the built heritage of Baddeck and other historical information was provided.

The “Communities in Bloom” group in Baddeck were involved in a competition - Baddeck was the only community being judged on Cape Breton. The archives clerk contributed to the program which involved a heritage component. The clerk compiled quite a lot of material to be make available for the two judges. Apparently, Baddeck scored quite well – the results of the competition will not be available for awhile, however, the judges indicated to the media that the bar was set very high.

In mid July, the Archives was paid a visit by Laura Lundell, her husband and daughter of Seymour, Tennessee. Laura is a direct descendent of Jonathan Jones. Jones was among of one of the first settlers to the Big Baddeck area. In October of 1790, he was granted approximately fifteen hundred acres of land in that area. They spent several days here searching up family history and visiting the graveyard where Mr. Jones is buried. We are looking forward to hearing from her upon their return home as she will be sending quite a bit of information concerning the Jones family.

The heritage inventory clerk was able to make a small beginning on built heritage properties in the north. A few buildings have been identified and the next few months will see a good deal of progress in getting that inventory underway.

Every day someone new is appearing in the archives seeking information on a multitude of topics which we endeavour to provide assistance to these people. As a result of these visits, we learn something new almost daily. We were very pleased to receive as a gift an old vacation guide which was produced by the Province of Nova Scotia in 1939. Bob and Vida Nostrand from Huntington, N.Y. very kindly gave it to the archives when they were here on their boat in mid July. This publication would be a forerunner to the “Doers’ and Dreamers’” book which is published at the present time.

Well, that is the news from here for July. We will be back in touch at the end of August. Hope everyone has a great holiday on the 1st.
