Victoria County Heritage/Archives Newsletter - June 2005
It is hard to believe that we have come to the end of June. The month just slipped by so quickly. Being busy every day with visitors, research and inventory work makes the time go by very fast indeed.
On Monday, 13th June, the heritage clerk conducted a walking tour of the main street of Baddeck for a group of Grade eleven students from Baddeck Academy. The students and their teacher, Francis MacLellan, were given a tour which highlighted the buildings located on the main street from the Old Post Office to Bethune’s Corner. This is the third visit from that same class since February.
The Iona Connection board met in Iona in early June. The main objective in the near future of the organization is the creation of a new web portal which will incorporate the new heritage locator map produced by the Iona Connection last year. It is hoped that monies to assist with this project will be made available through the Province. June 24th was Cabot Day – the ceremonies took place on Saturday, 25th
June at the Cabot Landing site in Aspy Bay. This year marked the five hundred and eighth year since John Cabot was purported to have made landfall in the northern part of our county. The heritage clerk, as usual, wrote an article for the local newspaper – The Victoria Standard. This month’s article featured Farquharson Presbyterian church in Middle River. This was well received as several people from that area passed along favourable comments.
That’s the news from the Heritage/Archives for June. Happy Canada Day everyone. We will be reporting once again at the end of July.
