Cape Breton University Art Gallery
Cape Breton University Art Gallery, the first and only full-time public art gallery on Cape Breton Island, acts as a major cultural resource within the educational and research context of the University as well as the boarder community. The Art Gallery works to broaden and enhance the knowledge and understanding of contemporary and historical accomplishments in visual arts, in particular Canadian and Atlantic visual art.
The Permanent Collection exists as an educational resource for the University community and the general public and fosters an appreciation of the visual arts as an expression of our cultural history and identity. The gallery's fundamental mission is to acquire and present to the public the finest works of art, with particularly works of art of Canadian origin, with an emphasis on the Atlantic region, and in particular, Cape Breton Island. In its role as custodian of an extensive permanent collection, the gallery offers educational tours and research facilities to broaden and enhance the knowledge of contemporary and historical accomplishments in visual art with particular emphasis on the development and understanding of Canadian art.
The Art Gallery hosts regular exhibitions of contemporary local artists' work, not only to provide a site for contemporary scholarship, but also to extend that link between the artistic and broader communities which the University serves. This matrix between community and artist - visual, performing or otherwise - has always been crucial in Cape Breton and by providing contemporary exhibits, the Cape Breton University Art Gallery continues this important cultural tradition.
