| Fort Petrie Military Museum |
Fort Petrie Military Museum was established to preserve the history, heritage and culture of the community and to educate the public about the important role Sydney Harbour played in both World Wars. Fort Petrie is one of seven fortifications that was located along Sydney Harbour during WWII with some forts having history dating back to the 1700's. The need this fortification system was realized at the outbreak of WWII because of the coal and steal production in local communities. The fortifications protected Sydney Harbour from enemy ships and submarines entering but is also protected the convoys that left the harbour carrying coal and steel to England. Today the site of Fort Petire offers visitors a two storey underground, two WWII gun emplacements and a museum located in the BOP (observation post) with guided tours of the entire site. Fort Petrie is situated along the Colliery Route on 13 acres of beautiful land. A viewing platform availble which offers a panoramic view of Sydney Harbour, various shore birds, eagles etc.. Also great for astrology buffs.
