The Whale Interpretive Centre in Pleasant Bay, NS, is operated by the Friends of Whale Watch Cape Breton, an non-profit group. The centre opened in 2000 to promote and preserve an awareness of whales and marine life. The Cabot Trail coastline, especially in the Highlands National Park is noted for whale watching, with over 20 operators on the island. A creative exhibit at the centre take visitors on a fascinating trip through whale evolution from the whale's origin to today's efforts to save these much-loved benemoths from extinction. The visitor can view scale illustrations of sixteen species of whales that may be sighted at varioius times of the year in the waters off Cape Breton.
In the Whales's World exhibit visitors meet "Hook" a life-size model of a pilot whale. Hook is suspended above a saltwater livestock tank containing many live creatures found in the whale's environment. These and many more exhibit will insure the visitor leaves with an awareness and interest in the whales and their environment.
Special tours are given through out the day, and nature programs and presented at various times during the week.
