MacFarlane Woods Nature Reserve

MacFarlane Woods Nature Reserve is an outdoor museum located in Mull River near Mabou (click here to view topographical map).

Carrying the name of the MacFarlane Family, which arrived here in 1820 from the Isle of Mull in Scotland, the forest is one of the few remaining "old-growth" woods, never cut over.

The trail is well marked with orange ribbons and may at times be boggy in places. It leads from the quiet gravel roadside through a section of regenerating growth to the climax hardwood hilltop with its stand of birch, maple and beech. The nature enthusiast will also find a profuse collection of ferns and wildflowers as well as a rapidly flowing brook.

Protected as a nature reserve under the Special Places Protection Act of the Province of Nova Scotia through the cooperation of the owner, a MacFarlane descendant, the trail is a walk of moderate difficulty which offers many opportunities for photography and peaceful reflection.

Open to the public with no admission fee, the walk through the woods at a leisurely pace may take a couple of hours in order to savour fully the beauty of this quiet outdoor museum.

When you visit, please assist in the protection of the area:
  • please leave all natural materials and plants where they are
  • please carry away any litter you may find along the trail
  • please stay on the marked trail as areas off the path may be sensitive or part of ongoing research
  • please: no smoking

Driving Directions:
While travelling along Route 19, the Ceilidh Trail, take a side road marked:
"Mabou Ridge and Glencoe" and follow it for five and one half (5½) miles to a road on the left marked "Mull River Road, MacFarlane Woods Road". Watch for a sign on the left side of this gravel road.
