Municipality of Victoria County Archives

Victoria County was created in 1851 by a special act in the British Parliament. The final reading and passing of the act came about in April of 1851. Prior to that time, what is now Victoria County as part of Cape Breton County. The county was named Victoria in honour of Queen Victoria.

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the county in 2001, the Municipal Council established a Heritage and Archives Department for Victoria County. A permanent room was made available within the Court House and since January of 2002, the archives has been a tangible entity. decided it was time to

The collection, to date, consists of the municipal proceedings and minutes dating back to 1875. In addition, there are publications, local histories, journals, diaries, etc. Along with the archival materials, the inventory of the built heritage buildings in the county are also housed in this department.
